UNDERSTANDING PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU)

Phenylketonuria PKU is a rare hereditary condition. It affects the individual's power to break down an essential nutrient called phenylalanine. Typically, the body makes an enzyme known as phenylalanine hydroxylase, which transforms phenylalanine into tyrosine. In people who have PKU, this enzyme lacks function properly. As a result, phenylalanine
